How to Host a Great Party Where Nobody Has to Drink

Every party guest list in India now includes people who are not drinking tonight: the designated driver, the 6am runner, the pregnant friend, the person on antibiotics, the person who simply stopped. The old hosting move was a sad corner of soft drinks. The new move is simpler — one drinks table, real options, zero commentary.

**Rule one: one table, no segregation.** Put the non-alcoholic beer in the same ice bucket as the regular beer, not on a separate "for the non-drinkers" shelf. When both options sit together, choosing either is unremarkable — which is the entire goal. A guest holding a SOMA looks like a guest holding a beer, because they are one.

**Rule two: never narrate anyone's glass.** The fastest way to ruin a mixed table is "arre, why aren't you drinking?" As host, you set the tone: offer everything once, comment on nothing. A good pour beats a good explanation.

**The stock math.** For a party of 10-12, stock 6-8 non-alcoholic beers alongside the regular supply. In our experience half the "drinkers" will also have one — usually late in the evening when they are pacing themselves or driving soon. NA beer is the only category where the drinkers steal from the non-drinkers' stash. A SOMA 6-pack is ₹1,194 (₹199 a can, 500ml), delivered in Bangalore, and unopened cans keep for the next party.

**Serve it cold, pour it out.** All beer etiquette applies: 4-6°C, poured into a glass. If you remember one detail, chill the NA beer properly — a warm one is as sad as any warm lager.

**Pairing the menu (from our own pairing chart).** Sundowner, the crisp lager, is the crowd-pleaser: momos, paneer tikka, wood-fired pizza, grilled chicken, anything fried. Juice Riot, the hazy IPA, is built for the spicy end of the table — biryani, chilli paneer, barbecue wings, tacos; big tropical hop flavor cools heat better than any strong beer, since alcohol amplifies chilli burn and Juice Riot has none to speak of. Sunday Wit handles the fresh and brunchy plates: Thai curry, bruschetta, eggs, lemon tart. Dark Arts is the dinner-party closer — seekh kebab, smoked barbecue, aged cheddar, and above all chocolate dessert. Stout plus brownies is the single best pairing in this entire post.

**Two five-second bar tricks.** A SOMA shandy: half Sundowner, fresh lime, pinch of salt — the Bangalore afternoon drink. A beer-mosa: Juice Riot topped with fresh orange juice, which owns Sunday brunch. Both list at cocktail effort of roughly zero.

**For the host who is also not drinking:** hosting sober used to mean playing bartender with an empty glass. Pour yourself the stout, take the toast, drive everyone home. The party is exactly as good — and you get tomorrow morning as a bonus.
