Brewed NA Beer vs Malt Drinks: How to Tell What You Are Holding

Walk down any non-alcoholic beer shelf in India and you are looking at two different products wearing the same outfit. Both say beer. Both are cold, carbonated, and malt-coloured. But one of them was brewed and one of them was mixed - and nothing on the front of the can will tell you which is which.

The difference is fermentation. Beer is what happens when yeast eats malt sugars: it makes alcohol, yes, but also the esters, depth, and roundness that make beer taste like beer. A brewed non-alcoholic beer goes through all of that and then has the alcohol removed afterwards. A malt-based soft drink skips fermentation entirely - malt extract, water, carbonation, sweeteners, done. It is a legitimate product. It is just not a brewed one, and your tongue knows the difference even when the shelf does not.

So here are the three checks, ten seconds total.

Check one: find the yeast. Read the ingredient list. A brewed beer's list looks like a brewery: water, barley malt, hops, yeast. No yeast anywhere on the label is the single loudest clue, because no yeast means no fermentation, and no fermentation means it is a malt-flavoured soft drink. While you are there, a list that leads with sugar and preservatives is telling you the same story a second way.

Check two: find the process words. Brands that ferment and dealcoholize say so - words like "brewed," "dealcoholized," or "alcohol removed" earn their place on a label. Nobody who does the expensive thing forgets to mention it. Silence about process usually is the answer about process.

Check three: find the number. In India, non-alcoholic means at or under 0.5% ABV. A serious brand declares its ABV plainly on the front. If you cannot find an ABV statement at all, put it back and choose something that respects you enough to print a number.

We are deliberately not naming names here - shelves change, recipes change, and the point is not a callout. The point is that you can run these three checks on any can in your own fridge, tonight, in less time than it took to read this paragraph.

Where SOMA sits: water, barley malt, hops, yeast. Fermented all the way, then dealcoholized by vacuum distillation to under 0.5% ABV - the full process is in how we take the alcohol out, and the category's legal lines are on the numbers page.

Two drinks, one shelf label. Now you can tell them apart.

Brewed bold. No hangovers.
